Lizzie Evans - finalist IFST Young Scientist of the Year

After returning back to Harper Adams after completing my placement year, it was then that I had to complete my HRP for my course Bsc (Hons) Food, Nutrition and Well-being.

While I was completing my HRP, I saw the IFST Young Scientist of the Year event advertised. I decided that I had put so much time and effort into my HRP that it would be worth a shot of entering the competition.

I was then over the moon that I had made it to the final at Coventry University! It turns out that nobody had ever been able to represent Harper Adams at this competition before and that all of the other competitors in the undergraduate category were from the ‘home team’ (Coventry University).

I presented my “An investigation into the ethanol and chemical compounds lost during the production of mulled wine” to a panel of four judges that are high up in the food and drink industry, one of which was the global quality managed for Pepsi Co.

Unfortunately, I did not win but I have taken a lot away from being able to have this opportunity and experience and achieved a lot by getting to the final. However, I still won a prize of £25.00 and IFST membership for a year!

I would like to say a massive thank you to my parents, the staff at Harper Adams and Dr David Llewellyn for the support, encouragement and kind words before attending this event.

I would also encourage future students to enter this competition if given the chance – it is a fantastic opportunity to have and to represent Harper Adams.
